<itunes:summary>in 2006, i became quick friends with Gary Colyer. we saw each other play at the gryphon cafe open mic and we just clicked. i recorded "not aintry" because Gary wouldn't leave me alone until i had recorded more songs. the album was mostly recorded in february of 2007 due to the challenge of a certain collective that i can't remember the name of. they had a bunch of musicians sign up to record their separate albums in one month and i joined because i needed a little extra flames lit under my butt. i had so many songs and a new means to record them - i had just bought a snowball mic and a macbook with garageband recording capabilities. at the end of the month of recording and finishing the ten required songs, i planned a vacation in california. the night before i left for the west coast, all of my things were stolen out of my friend Gary's car, including my computer. luckily, we saved all that i had recorded onto Gary's computer just hours before the theft. after buying a new macbook with the insurance money, i recorded five more songs (including one written in california), sent some ideas for artwork for the album to my friend Carrie Kerstetter, and subsequently sent everything in to discmakers to have it pressed (sounds like i had my act together, but it really took a few more months to finally get it all done). i experimented a little more for this album. some songs have about ten tracks on them of guitar, voice, organ, trumpet and other sounds. there is very little percussion on the album and i think that helps it maintain the feel of my solo live shows. i'm very proud of this album and i hope the amount of energy i put into it reflects in the music that i produced.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>i wrote the "airport store" about a dream i had awhile back. i'm always interested in what dreams have to say, whether it's simply the subconscious, something greater or a combination of the two at work. pretty much everything in the song happened in my dream, but i had to add the "hope you have a nice day, welcome to the airport store" bit to make the song seem more tangible, unified and catchy (it is folk pop).</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>there are a few emotions behind the song "community". i wrote the song while i was waiting alone in my room for a bunch of friends to come over for a party while my roommates sat downstairs watching television. i think i was upstairs behind my door because i was feeling insecure, like i shouldn't bother anybody with my presence. at the same time, i was thinking about how most of my songs are so depressing that i wanted to write a joy song. it didn't completely turn out that way, but i was happy to know that a bunch of friends were about to come over and i think that came out in the song. the song also refers to the way i think the church should be, like a party.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>i recorded "the phil ep" when my friend Phil Richardson was taking classes in recording. i suppose it makes more sense to say "we" recorded than "i" recorded. i wouldn't have thought of recording anything, but Phil insisted and i like the idea. i was living in kentucky at the time and i was playing at a coffeeshop called solomon's porch every so often for the fun of it, but i didn't think anyone else would enjoy the songs i wrote even a fraction of the amount that i enjoyed them. Phil encouraged me a bunch and helped me record six songs at his parents' house, in his bedroom/recording studio. the six songs we recorded was only the beginning of what we wanted to record, but we called it quits due to time constraints. i wound up cutting one of the songs because i thought i sounded a bit off key in some parts. i was very impressed with how Phil made the album sound. just one guitar, one voice, nothing else. two tracks, nothing fancy, but i think the songs called for that at the time. the sound, the look and the way i press the cds (burn them just before shows and apply the face) is d.i.y. all the way. Phil recorded all the songs for free, and i was so thankful that i named the album after him, "the phil ep" (ep stands for "extended play"). even though i don't get to see Phil very often because he lives in kentucky and i in pennsylvania, he is a lifelong friend.</itunes:summary>
